I sometimes use the WordPress Daily Prompts to kick-start my writing.
Today’s inspiration is the word “colorful” (sic).
Readers from this side of the Atlantic may twitch at the spelling:
that missing “u”.
I do.
However, we have to remember that history has a part to play in this annoyance.
boring bit – Much of our spelling over here in England is affected by Johnson’s Dictionary which was published in 1755, by which time Northern America had a few million colonists. Whereas the USA is influenced by Noah Webster’s work published some 50 years later. – end of boring bit
This aside, spelling is a huge bugbear of mine.
Wherever you call home, there is a standardisation which dictates correct spelling.
The Americanisation of the English language makes my blood boil.
I don’t need simplification, z’s instead of s’s, and missing letters.
Layered on top of this is the growing use of KW for QUI and worst of all, backward letters and 4 for “for”.
Are we really that much in need of such dumbing down?
We have a rich and beautiful language and simplifying it to accommodate the lazier elements of society is a stupid and damaging move.
Rant over.
